A hemorrhoidectomy may be done with either a scalpel, a cautery pencil, or with a laser. Whether you use the traditional scalpel or newer instruments, the level of success is the same. While lasers seem fancier, they cost more, take longer, and even cause deeper injury to tissue.

Hemorrhoidectomy is about 95% effective in protecting against recurrence of hemorrhoids. Some early side effects include bleeding, problems with urination including urinary tract infections and difficulty urinating, pain, infection, impacted feces, and incontinence. Long-term issues include the forming of a fistula, or abnormal passage between the rectal or anal canal and other areas, rectal prolapse (rectum pushes through the anal opening), stenosis (the anal canal narrows), and hemorrhoid recurrence. Depending on the severity of your hemorrhoids, risking these side effects might be worthwhile. However, it is worth noting that the majority of internal hemorrhoids get smaller and show a reduction in discomfort with noninvasive procedures or home treatment. These less invasive procedures are less risky, hurt less, and mean less time out of work or other important activities of daily life. If internal hemorrhoids are small, doctors do not recommend surgery.

If you are going to have success following up a hemorrhoidectomy, the most important factor is to make the necessary changes to your bowel habits. It is essential to do what you can to pass stools as easily as possible. While you may see better results in the long term from a hemorrhoidectomy as opposed to less invasive, fixative procedures that work by cutting off the flow of blood to the hemorrhoid, surgery is expensive, offers more risks and complications, and generally has greater pain.

Hemorrhoids occur when the veins in the rectum and anus swell or become inflamed. There are a number of popular medical treatments for hemorrhoids, some medicinal, while others involve going to a doctor’s office for treatment. In this article we will discuss a little bit more about the types of hemorrhoids, when you need to see the doctor, and some common treatments. When you’re finished reading you’ll have a clear understanding of what you need to do and how doctor can help with your hemorrhoid treatment.

Where your hemorrhoid is located determines the symptoms. Inside the rectum is where you will find internal hemorrhoids. These generally are not uncomfortable; in fact you won’t be able to feel or see them. If you are straining when you make a bowel movement this can injure the surface of the hemorrhoid causing bleeding. Sometimes, an internal hemorrhoid can be pushed through the anal opening by excessive straining. When that happens, you have what is called a prolapsed or protruding hemorrhoid which can be frightening as well is causing irritation and pain. Under the skin in your anal region is where you will find external hemorrhoids. Unlike internal hemorrhoids which are generally not painful, external hemorrhoids when irritated itch and bleed, sometimes even pooling to form a clot. Hemorrhoidal clots are very painful and accompanied by inflammation and swelling.

If you experience bleeding during a bowel movement, you should see a doctor. Not all bleeding from the anal area is caused by hemorrhoids. Let your doctor do the physical and medical tests to rule out other conditions and diseases, providing you an accurate diagnosis of whether or not you have hemorrhoids. If you know you have hemorrhoids, and they are painful, frequently or excessively bleeding, and don’t respond to treatment at home. If you are passing bowel movements that are black, maroon, tarry, loaded with blood clots, or have an excessive amount of blood mixed in with the school, get to your doctor immediately. Schools like that can show a severe bleed somewhere in your digestive tract. Also go straight to the emergency room if you are experiencing severe rectal bleeding, are lightheaded, feel like you are going to faint, or are dizzy.

If you have an external hemorrhoid, the doctor will be able to palpate it for diagnosis by inserting a finger (they will wear gloves) into the rectum. However, as internal hemorrhoids may not be felt in a rectal because they are very soft, your doctor may also choose to use an anoscope, sigmoidoscope, or proctoscope to get a good look at the lower area of the colon and rectum.

Once your hemorrhoids are diagnosed, the next step is treatment. With hemorrhoids that cause just mild discomfort, you may be told to pick up over-the-counter ointment, cream, pad, or suppository. These products may use hydrocortisone or witch hazel to help with the itching and pain for at least a short time. If the over-the-counter treatments don’t work, they are procedures that are minimally invasive to help. For example, if you have a blood clot inside of external hemorrhoid, the doctor will do a minor incision to remove it, a treatment that works quickly and effectively.

If your hemorrhoids are painful or bleed a lot, there is an outpatient procedures. One is rubber band ligation, where the doctor places tiny rubber bands around an internal hemorrhoid’s base in order to cut the circulation of blood to the area. This might cause bleeding or be uncomfortable, but it’s not usually severe. The onset of the symptoms is usually somewhere between two and four days after the procedure. You can also have the doctor inject into the hemorrhoid tissue a chemical solution which will shrink it. This is called sclerotherapy. While injection causes minimal to no pain, it is often not as effective as rubber band ligation. Lastly, you may end up using infrared, bipolar, or laser coagulation. What this does is harden bleeding internal hemorrhoids and make them shrivel away. Even though coagulation doesn’t have a lot of side effects, there is more of a chance of your hemorrhoids coming back then if you were to use rubber band ligation.

If these outpatient procedures don’t do the trick, or if your hemorrhoids are particularly large, your doctor may suggest surgery. Some common surgical procedures include the hemorrhoidectomy, where the surgeon takes out the excess tissue that causes your bleeding. This can be done with sedation and a local anesthetic, a spinal anesthetic, or under general anesthesia. Hemorrhoidectomy, while it offers the most complete and effective method for the removal of hemorrhoids, it also has the most complications. Complications include temporary difficulty urinating and associated infections of the urinary tract. Most people also have pain after a hemorrhoidectomy. There are medications for this, and also a warm bath can be effective in helping to relieve pain. Another surgical procedure is a stapled hemorrhoidectomy. What this does is cut off the flow of blood to the hemorrhoid’s tissue. This is less painful than a hemorrhoidectomy and lets you get back to work faster, but it also offers a greater chance that the hemorrhoidal return as well as the possibility of a prolapsed rectum, which means that there is a part of the rectum that sticks out from the anus. It’s up to you and your doctor to decide which of these surgical procedures would work best for you.

5 Natural Remedies To Relieve Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids cause the most discomfort because the skin can erode or get irritated; and if there is a blood clot on the inside part of an external hemorrhoid, severe and sudden pain can ensue. With the external hemorrhoid you may even see a lump or feel it around the anus. On the other hand, internal hemorrhoids are generally painless.

Whether you are suffering from internal or external hemorrhoids, there are five good natural remedies that you can make a part of your hemorrhoid treatment regimen. The first is fiber. Fiber is great as it not only increases the stool’s bulk but can also soften it, both of which cause a reduction in straining. In a study of 378 hemorrhoid sufferers, seven random trials showed the fiber helps relieve itching, pain, and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. You can get more fiber in food, increasing your intake of vegetables and whole grains. Also you can find fiber supplements in powdered form such as Psyllium. And don’t neglect ground flaxseed.

Another natural remedy you may want to try is a plant compound called bioflavonoids. These strengthen and stabilize the walls of the blood vessels and cut down on inflammation. Side effects are both rare and mild, which makes bioflavonoids useful in treating pregnancy related hemorrhoids. Avoid flavonoid tangeretin if you are taking a treatment for breast cancer called tamoxifen. Flavanoids are common in citrus fruits, herperidin, oxerutins, and diosmin.

Another useful natural remedy is Butcher’s Broom. This plant is known as box holly, knee holly, and sweet broom, and has been used in Europe historically to treat varicose veins and hemorrhoids, as it helps with poor circulation. However if you have high blood pressure, are pregnant or nursing, have BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), are taking an MAO inhibitor or alpha blocker, make sure to check with your doctor before taking butcher’s broom.

The fourth common natural remedy is Horse Chestnut. Like butchers broom, horse chestnut is also helpful in increasing circulation in the veins, has anti-inflammatory properties, and improves the strength of the walls of the blood vessels. You can take force chestnut in a capsule or in tea form. Make sure you don’t have a bleeding disorder, allergies to anything in the force chestnut family, or are taking a blood thinner, as force chestnut can have an adverse affect. Also, though these side effects are not common, you can suffer from severe bleeding, bruising, kidney or liver damage, when using a horse chestnut treatment.

The last treatment for hemorrhoids we will discuss is witch hazel. You can get witch hazel in either a compress or a cream. Witch hazel is known to cut down on hemorrhoids bleeding because it has astringent properties.

With these natural remedies, you now have the tools to treat your hemorrhoids at home.

stool test came back positive for blood twice, but during this time she had inflammed hemorrhoids. I am Dr. Nelson. Needing surgery for anything can be scary, especially if you aren’t informed about all of your options, what to expect, and exactly what will be done. Hemorrhoid surgery is no exception.

Hemorrhoids are usually not serious enough to require surgery if taken care of right away. But if they are not taken care of, if hemorrhoid treatments don’t work, if they are a recurring problem, or if they are extremely painful, bleeding, thrombosed, prolapsed, or strangulated, then they may require hemorrhoid surgery.

Traditional hemorrhoid surgery (also called Hemorrhoidectomy) consists of removing the affected hemorrhoid veins and any surrounding tissue that may also have become inflamed and sore due to having hemorrhoids. The veins affected by serious hemorrhoid problems can be stretched, out of shape, and possibly bleeding. Removing them is sometimes the best option if there has been recurring problems, a lot of bleeding, or a strangulated hemorrhoid.

What to Expect

Hemorrhoid surgery may require staying in the hospital for at least one night. There are occasions when it can be done on an outpatient basis, however, and you can be allowed to go home later in the same day.

When you are being prepared for hemorrhoid surgery, you might have to follow a particular diet, one that will make your stools soft and possibly even require a stool softener or laxative to help rid your colon and lower intestines of fecal matter. This will make contamination during surgery less of a risk. You may also be given an enema to make sure that there is nothing remaining in there during the surgery.

Using an instrument called an anoscope to see the hemorrhoid and the surrounding area, the surgeon will tie off the vein that supplies blood to the hemorrhoid and remove the hemorrhoid as well as some of the tissue around it.

After having the surgery, you can expect some pain and discomfort and also to be monitored closely to make sure you are healing well. You may be given painkillers as well as a laxative to help you with your bowel movements while the area heals. You will be monitored for bleeding, pain, and drainage of fluid, asked if there is any throbbing or muscle spasms in your rectal area, and checked for fever and constipation. You can expect recovery time to be anywhere from two to three weeks.

While hemorrhoid surgery may be considered the most effective answer to getting rid of hemorrhoids and the best option for avoiding a recurrence of hemorrhoid problems, it is not the only answer to treating severe hemorrhoids. Ask your doctor if he or she considers you a candidate for a less invasive hemorrhoid treatment that might take care of the problem with less pain and recovery time.

Hemorrhoid surgery may be the best choice for you, but checking into the other options will give you a clear mind about taking the steps you need to hopefully be free of hemorrhoids for good. Talking to your doctor should give you all the information you will need to decide if hemorrhoid surgery is for you.

I asked my gyno about a hemorrhoid tag that i’ve had for a year, and she told me that it won’t go away on its own and they only way to get rid of it is surgery. Is this true? It’s not painful, but I do feel self-conscious about it.

There are several different treatment options available for hemorrhoid tags or swellings, and not all of them are surgical.

First, you can try some things yourself – probiotic foods (like yogurt), stool softener (NOT laxative), switch to moist wipes (unscented baby wipes) instead of toilet paper, increase fiber, increase how much water you drink, sitz baths with epsom salts. Avoid using aspirin for a painkiller. If these simple measures don’t help, the next step is to consult a doctor about other options. Don’t use steroid creams or pads/wipes without speaking to your doctor – things like cortisone can weaken the skin and make the hemorrhoid worse.

Infrared coagulation, often mistakenly called "laser" treatment, is a non-surgical procedure. Basically, a doctor inserts a small probe next to the base of the hemorrhoid tissue that is inflamed and infrared light is used to form a clot. The clot cuts bloodflow to the swelling, and it shrinks back down. Advantages are that it is relatively comfortable (performed in-office, no anaesthesia as it is above the pain nerves – you would just feel some pressure) and has very little recovery time or activity limitations. Disadvantages are that it usually requires somewhere between 5 to 10 treatments 3 to 5 weeks apart, and you may or may not see improvement with the first 1 or 2 treatments. It is also more effective in some cases when paired with drug therapy or probiotic use to normalize the gut. It does not work well for people who are on blood thinners.

Rubberband (or Baron) Ligation is slightly more uncomfortable than the infrared coagulation, and about as effective. Advantages are that it generally requires only 1 or 2 treatment sessions, and is more widely available. It works basically by putting a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid tissue and waiting for it to fall off. Anaesthesia is sometimes used, but not always.

Hemorrhoidectomy is the surgery your doctor mentioned. It has about a 2 week recovery time, and does require anaesthesia.

Hi, i am Lenord. Having hemorrhoids is no picnic and can actually cause a lot of problems. With the ability to range from mild irritation to something so severe that surgery is required, hemorrhoids are nothing you should ignore.

External hemorrhoids are no less serious than internal hemorrhoids. As a matter of fact, they can cause more pain and itching than their internal counterparts might cause. There are times that external hemorrhoids can become strangulated, meaning they can get caught inside the anus and possibly end up with a blood clot.

There is also the chance that an external hemorrhoid might become thrombosed. This happens when an external hemorrhoid swells and becomes severely inflamed to the point of being extremely painful and causing extra discomfort.

Both strangulated and thrombosed external hemorrhoids may require surgery to correct. There are many types of surgery for hemorrhoids, and the length of time required to recover as well as the pain and discomfort while recovering varies with each different type of treatment.

External hemorrhoids can be caused by many things, including pregnancy and childbirth, obesity, coughing extremely hard, liver disease, and straining to have a hard bowel movement. No matter what caused your hemorrhoids, you should do everything you can to treat them before they become a real problem.

When external hemorrhoid problems first begin, you may not even know what the problem is. Pain, itching, and problems going to the bathroom are all abnormal, but with the stigma of hemorrhoids, there is little chance that you will want to admit you have them to anyone, even yourself.

External hemorrhoids are easy to recognize. The veins at the opening of the anal canal become inflamed and swollen, making you feel like there is something there that doesn’t belong. Being constipated, having diarrhea, and straining when going to the bathroom or even coughing may hurt and make the swelling worse.

One of the worst things you might experience with external hemorrhoids is possibly having a blood vessel break. If this happens, there will be a lot of bleeding and pain, and it will probably require surgery to repair. When you have hemorrhoids, it is very important to take care of them right away. Avoiding problems may be as simple as using a hemorrhoid cream or taking a warm bath a couple of times a day.

The easiest way to take care of hemorrhoids is to add plenty of fiber and water to your diet. Adding fiber will help you have easier to pass bowel movements, making the strain on your rectum less and helping the hemorrhoids to heal.

External hemorrhoids may be painful and have a chance of becoming a bigger problem if left untreated. You can choose to help heal them now or ignore them and take a chance at ending up with external hemorrhoid problems that may be more difficult to control. Choosing to help them go away now means that there will be less of a chance for future problems to develop.

As of two days ago, I now have internal hemorrhoids with no symptoms others than protrusion when I "squeeze" (for lack of a better term). No bleeding, no discoloration, etc… Actually, no discomfort at all, until I try to use the bathroom… I was reading that "rue oil" may be effective at reducing the size? Has anyone used, or know anyone who has used this method? Any other options/personal knowledge on the issue? I am very young to be going through this (22) and if there is ANY known non-surgical way to decrease the size, I would be extremely grateful. Thanks.

Is there a specific brand thats best? Is there a specific method thats best (wipes, gel,lotion,pads,ect)? Approx. how long does it take to work?

These are prescription products which have helped me.
#1. Anucort – hc 25mg. It’s a Hydrocortisone supository.
#2. Analpram HC. Application exactly like Preparation H.

I’ve had a problem similar to this for many years. I recently had a colonoscopy (sp) and the test required removal of two inflamed polyps. — (non cancerous)

* ** I was required to not eat foods with roughage for two weeks. During that time my problem literally dissapeared. I’ve lived on shredded wheat in the morning for years. I switched to Cheerios, stopped popcorn and nuts. My food intake was clocely monitored by my wife (Rn.) I felt much better at the end of the two wks..***

I agree wholeheartedly with consuming Metamucil type products daily and drink a minimum of 6 glasses of water or juice products. Try to limit juices to cranberry, grape, cran-apple or cran-raspberry.

Stay away from acid foods. Tomato’s, orange juice, pasta etc.

All these suggestions came from my Gastorenterologist. (sp) Dr. of human intestines. Hope hope you feel better soon.

I’ve had irritation and itching on-and-off for years, sometimes with a little blood. In the last few months, it’s gotten worse and has been a daily problem. My doctor examined me and diagnosed me with proctitus, although they are the same symptoms as hemorrhoids. He prescribed sitz baths and prescription suppositories. That was a month ago and the problem persists. I’ve been taking 1 sitz bath a day. Should I take more than 1? I did call my doctor and now he’s suggesting surgery, which I would like to avoid! Any suggestions?

Tucks Medicated pads and eat more fiber to have a better flow so there is no pushing. Take a deep breath in the nose and let it out the mouth when trying to go #2. Repeat 3 or 4 times to relieve pressure. This will help from pushing the little buggers out and keep from bleeding. Surgery as a last result. We all have them. Some people’s never get pushed out. Good luck, they can be painful.

You can spend all the money you want on cremes and pads but the cheapest and best way to get rid of them is buy a bottle of witch hazel and apply to a cloth(wash cloth, paper towel ,whatever) and I know this sounds bad but fold and place in between cheeks up against the area and relax..keep in on for alittle while..do this at least 3xs a day. Remember also DON’T STRAIN when going to the bathroom and if you have problems take a laxative. If they don’t go away after awhile go see a doctor.

Hemorrhoid treatment center?

Has anyone ever been to the "Hemorrhoid Treatment Center" (a place that specializes in removing hemmy’s using infrared coagulation?
Is it painful? Did your insurance cover it?
I called this place and it sounds very expensive after all the follow-up visits (~ $5-6K total).
I have been suffering now for about 1yr and really need to do something about this, but kinda scared to go to see the Dr.
I am not really constipated and clean with prep H wipes after each movement. But, I do notice that maybe I also have internal hemmys that prevents all the BM to completely come out after I wipe. Very uncomfortable to say the least.

I had the rubber band ligation done a few months ago. The procedure itself didn’t hurt and the insurance paid for it. Afterwards it was kind of uncomfortable until the hemmorid falls off, but the Dr gave me Vicodin for pain and that helped alot. If you go this route, plan on resting at home for at least a day. It wasn’t expensive, I saw that the insurance company was billed 129.00, so even if you have to pay for this, it’s not overly expensive.
PS it’s very embaressing, but a necessary evil.

Can I use a needle to lance/pop a thrombosed external hemorrhoid myself? Or will the emergency room doctor do it? I am out of town so can’t see my family doctor and can’t wait until I go home next week.

If you do it yourself, you are risking a lot. It isn’t like a pimple that you can easily pop. They are very vascular and tend to bleed a lot. The ER is the place to start. They shouldn’t "pop" it in the ER, unless they have something to tie it off with, band it, or cauterize it to stop the bleeding. They may just tell you to ice it or give you something for the pain. Then, when you get home, see your doctor to set up a time for the small surgical procedure. If you do decide to do it yourself, expect excessive blood loss, pain, and potential infection.

The hemorrhoid is not an open wound. It’s not bleeding or open or anything.

Bad idea. The exposed tissue needs to heal. Take a stool softener, aok in a warm bath, use tucks pads to wipe instead of toilet paper, apply hemroid ointment to the infected area. That’s all you need to do.

My husband has a hemmorhoid (External,i believe) and it has gotten a small slit in the middle that is bleeding. I am taking him to the doctor tomorrow, but was wondering can anyone give me a good idea of what to expect there.Especially what kind of treatment we might be looking at. Also would surgery even have to be on the table right now, we really don’t want to do anything that extreme yet. Any Answers are appreciated.

Prevent further damage on his external anal sphincter by:
*avoiding constipation (eat fiber rich foods such as oat meal, drink extra fluid such as water and prune juice)
*avoid foods that may cause constipation
*avoid straining during defecation and avoiding too much friction during washing of the area
*sit on a doughnut-shaped cushion to avoid direct pressure on the anus

Provide temporary relieve by:
*sitting on a warm water (steam)
*or apply ice
*too much pain- can take mild analgesics but non opioids because it causes constipation

if it is too painful and damaged, the doctor may suggest an operation, hemorrhoidectomy. it is a short procedure done in an OPD or in a minor surgery suit. the patient may go home afterwards. god bless.
