My cousin had been told he needs a Hemorrhoidectomy. He is only 21 yrs old. He has been suffering for about 3 yrs. Anyone know about this?

Hemorrhoidectomy is to Hemorrhoids what Appendicectomy is to the Appendix. The bad veins are going to be tied off, removed and cauterized while your cousin is under a general anesthetic. The poor chap is going to be in pain for a while but the relief this operation brings will be immense.

I done the staple hemorroid surgery may last year..but recently iam bleeding again when iam passing motion. how ? anybody hav he same experience ?

you may have developed more hemmarhoids. Most surgeons may only do an anoscopy and treat you accordingly. If you notice even slightest hardness in BM’s, try to take something over the counter that makes them soft and does not give you a diarhea. Do remember that every person with bleeding per rectum needs to be seen by the doctor, at least once. There can be more than one reasons for this. You can start by just calling the surgeons office too, good luck

Mine was a hemorrhoidectomy. I had internal and external stitches. The doctor did my surgery and then went on vacation. I could not urinate unless I stood up. I ended up with a yeast infection. The pain was so intense I could feel my heart beating in my rectum! I called his nurse because I was miserable, and she sent me to the ER where two RN’s tried to check my for an impaction so they could do an enema, and I’m begging like a 2 yr old because of all the stitches. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced. They even had to do an in and out catheter because I couldn’t pee. If you can beat this story you get 10 points. Good luck.

Last March I had a Mastectomy. While I was in recovery, blood was filling my drains and my blood pressure began dropping. They had to take me back into surgery because the dr must have nicked a muscle. Because of that I developed a blood clot at the mastectomy site. This cut off the oxygen and my remaining skin began to die off. I had to go to hyperbaric oxygen treatments every day for 4 weeks. Each week I had to go back to the surgeon so he could cut away the top layer of dead skin. For 6 weeks I had visiting nurses come to my home to clean out the huge open wound that was left. It took 4 months to heal from that surgery. As soon as that healed I had to have a port-a-cath put into the left side of my chest for chemo treatments. It was supposed to be a 20 minute procedure. Mine took over 3 hours because the vein that was supposed to be coming out of the left side of my heart, was coming out of the right side. They had to do so much manipulating that the side of my chest was black and blue for weeks.

I am a 37-year-old male, 190 lbs. I have been to two urologists with different diagnosis. I have had trouble starting my urinary stream for as long as I can remember. The stream remains weak during urination and as a result I have a phobia about urinating with others nearby. There is never any pain or blood during urination. I also get up 1-2 times a night to urinate. There is no family history of prostate cancer in my family. I went to a doctor April 2008 because of increased strain while trying to urinate after I get up at night. I do go frequently during the day…especially after the first urination.

The first doctor said that I suffer from BPH due to an enlarged prostate. He performed a cystoscopy…urodynamics and a prostate ultrasound. Nothing significant was found during the cystoscopy. The prostate ultrasound came back with 29 cc or grams…not sure which unit of measurement is correct there. The urinalysis findings led my first doctor to believe that I may have MS possibly resulting in detrusor sphincter dysynergia (DSD). MRI scans of my brain and spinal cord came back negative for MS. The MRI for the cervical spine did find a right posterolateral C5-6 disk herniation that mildly contacts and flattens the ventral cord extending to the proximal right C5-6 foramen. I was on flomax/avodart for 7 months with no change in urinary habits. His recommendation is for a procedure…TUMT/TUIP or TURP.

I recently went to another doctor for a second opinion. The results (history/tests) from the first doctor were forwarded to the second doctor. After an oral examination, he did not feel that my prostate size was the issue. Since, I also have a history of large hemorrhoids/constipation/spastic colon and IBS; he thought there might be a correlation with that. I am an introvert and believe the source of most of my stress goes to my colon. He gave me a PSA test, which came back normal (0.5). Also, he performed a renal/bladder ultrasound. The results showed that I was not emptying completely…especially for someone of my age. After a cystoscopy with him (just last week), he said I have scar tissue in my urethra from a stricture. He thinks I may have suffered some injury as a child. He recommends that I undergo a Direct Visual Internal Urethrotomy (DVIU) to take care of the narrowing as a result of the stricture/scar tissue. He also wants to do an urodynamics test with me to see what he finds. He gave me a month’s sample of uroxatral, which did not help my stream any.

I am set to undergo an endoscopy with my Gastro doctor this upcoming week. Blood results show that I am chronic microcytic anemic due to low MCV/MCH. My hemoglobin is fine. My doctors think I have a Mediterranean gene even though I am mostly northern European. My ferritin levels are also really low and I have begun taking an iron supplement (ferrous sulfate). I underwent a stapled hemorrhoidectomy last October and already have one autoimmune disease (limited scleroderma/CREST syndrome); so he wants to rule out Celiac disease, I suppose due to possible malabsorption. I no longer have a bleeding issue with my hemorrhoids due to the surgery. Also since any effort to bulk up my stool due to increased fiber and laxatives has failed.

My biggest concern is the vast difference in opinion between both urologists in what my issue may be. Any suggestions? Are there questions I should be asking my doctors?

I can understand your concern with the different opinions of each doctor. I work in the medical field and I can tell you one thing for sure: doctors aren’t always right. Their diagnoses are subject to as much human error as anyone else in any field they may work in.

Maybe get a third opinion and see what your options are at that point. My gut reaction is leaning towards the second doctor being more correct than the first, though.

I have a job where I stand on my feet all day and the older I’ve gotten the more susceptible I am to getting hemorrhoids. I have been told by one GI doctor (after getting a colonoscopy) that I will need to get them removed because they are that bad. I didn’t want to hear that because I can only imagine how painful the recovery is. But now its about 3 months later and they are getting worse and EXTREMELY PAINFUL! If you’ve never had them, then I pray you never do because you can’t begin to imagine how it feels to have something hanging out your bung-hole and its throbbing and bleeding and also so swollen it’s touching cotton.

Preparation H isn’t helping at all and neither are the tucks pads. What else can be done to help with the pain short of getting the surgery done? Please help.

You can always try one or more home remedies – and they have been reported to help many people. But you also have to realize that at some point things may have progressed to the point that surgery is your only option. Yes, it may hurt a bit and the recovery may be a bit tough – but nothing compared to the continued pain and agony you will suffer is you don’t get fixed.

It is no secret that I am no fan of mainstream drugs or cancer treatments, but mainstream doctors here in the U.S. are the best in the world at repairing injured and broken parts. That and diagnostics is what they excel at.

If it were me, depending on how tough it would be to continue coping with your hemorrhoids, I would try remedies first and opt for surgery if they didn’t work. Here are some suggestions that have been reported to help others:

* Fresh lime juice and olive oil. Mix equal two teaspoons of each and apply on effected area or else use a clean applicator which can be inserted. You should feel a difference in pain after the first use and it is reported that regular use will permanently eliminate hemorrhoids.

* Mix one teaspoon fresh mint leaves juice with one teaspoon of lemon juice & one tablespoon of honey. Take three times a day for relief.

* Boil a mashed ripe banana in one teacup milk & take two to three times a day.

* Apply a crushed onion, which has been skinned and roasted, to dry and bleeding piles.

* Liquid Blistex. It’s much more soothing & doesn’t feel greasy (it feels like it is burning for the first few seconds but then feel soothing & relaxing/ Works much faster than Preparation-H and doesn’t have the awful embarrassing smell.

* Dried Figs. Wash two to three dried figs very well & soak in a glass of cold water overnight. Have it first thing in the morning. Similarly have figs in the evening that have been soaked in the morning. Have them for two to three weeks for good results. It is effective treatment for ordinary piles as well as bleeding piles.

* Vitamin B6 tablets. This remedy works after just a day or two if your hemorrhoids come from a deficiency of this vitamin, which is often true

* Red tomato. Slice a red tomato and place on hemorrhoids for about one hour. Repeat for several days as needed.

* Vitamin E oil. Apply Vitamin E oil to affected area as often as needed.

* Witch Hazel cream. The tannins in witch hazel tighten the weak veins that trigger painful hemorrhoids. Apply witch hazel cream (be sure to buy the cream and not the clear liquid) three times daily.

I am 33 yrs old male and I went through hemorrhoidectomy and lateral anal sphincterotomy one week ago. I hve no other complications than mild incontinence and mild pain while passing stool. I am currently under medication and taking sitz bath thrice a day.

My question is how long the stitch will take to get dissolved completely and when I’ll be able to resume penile masturbation?

With whatever you describe, it looks you had hemorrhoids as well as fissure in Ano.. As you are saying that there were no complications and you are taking sitz thrice and everything is fine otherwise then I think it will take atleast another week for you to be able to resume that But I would strongly recommend you to abstain from it for another 2 weeks!!

The reason for this is as you have underwent lateral internal sphincterotomy your pelvic floor will be raw and week.. Let it gain some strenght then you can have that all throughout your life!!

I hope I spelled it right.
I ask this question because I’m gay and I wanna know if after having hemorrhoids surgically removed, I’d still be able to have anal sex, if it would be painful or not, if I would bleed, if there’s a chance of becoming impotent (as I read once), etc.
And another thing, while having the problem (not having yet the operation), what could happen if you have sex, and if you use lubricant?
Oh, and is "Anusol" anything like Prep H? Cuz we don’t have Prep H here but we do have Anusol.

There is not a lot of info out there regarding what can happen after surgery. You might search out a doctor who is comfortable talking about these issues. Here is some info I found:

i am just recovering from my episiotomy and now i am scheduled again to have another surgery. do you think its worth it to have a hemorrhoidectomy? i am so afraid of the pain they describing to me. pls give me some advice

There are creams you can buy at your local grocery store that will get rid of the hemorrhoids. I wouldn’t suggest a surgical removal of that, I’m sure your doctor can pescribe some kind of medication that could get rid of them as well. Developing hemorrhoids is completley normal after giving birth and after all of the pushing you do.

I’m 16 and I have a hemorrhoid. I already diagnosed myself (don’t ask..I have this obsession with Grey’s Anatomy and I have like 12 different medical encyclopedias).

My Husband has this surgery done a week ago tomorrow..he had on removed with 10+ stitches……. we had to call an ambulance the day of surgery because of the pain, they gave him morphine.

Since then the pain has not let up.. he is still taking 2 percocets every 4 hours and the pain is not bearable for him.

He is either in bed or in a sitz bath, he is taking stool softners and mineral oil and milk of magnesia (all Dr.’s orders)

I know that this is hard to go through but this is out of hand. The pain has not let up at all since day 2…

I feel that this is too much….

Has anyone been in this position and what do you do?

It is so hard to see him suffer when I know that modern medicine can help somehow.

I am planning on bringing him to his surgeon tomorrow, again, to make sure that nothing is wrong.

Something is dreadfully wrong; your husband should not be suffering like that six days after surgery. My daughter had that type surgery and, while uncomfortable for a couple of days, she didn’t have the problems you describe. She controlled the pain with a few Lortab and it was all over.

She did tell me that her first couple of bowel movements felt like she was passing wrecked trucks and broken glass. LOL The stool softeners kicked in and everything was "go" after that.

Ive had piles for 3 days and it’s very very painful and swollen and itch. I went to the docs yestoday and explained that Prep H and Anusol wasent working. He pescribed a stronger gel abd said if this doesent work you’ll need surgery.

Ive been reading up on hemorrhoidectomy for an hour and im intears from the horror stories and pictures ive seen! Its ment to be excrutatingly painful and im sooooo scared! I know they give painkills but they never work for me ive had morphine in the past and it didnt have any affect.

Is there ANYTHING at all I can do to get rid of these without sugery im so scared to death!

Just make sure you eat properly and drink lots of water so that they don’t get any worse. Stop reading- it’s not making you feel any better, is it?! Trust the medicine to kick in and try to distract yourself meantime.

Ive had piles for 3 days and it’s very very painful and swollen and itch. I went to the docs yestoday and explained that Prep H and Anusol wasent working. He pescribed a stronger gel abd said if this doesent work you’ll need surgery.

Ive been reading up on hemorrhoidectomy for an hour and im intears from the horror stories and pictures ive seen! Its ment to be excrutatingly painful and im sooooo scared! I know they give painkills but they never work for me ive had morphine in the past and it didnt have any affect.

Is there ANYTHING at all I can do to get rid of these without sugery im so scared to death!

Just make sure you eat properly and drink lots of water so that they don’t get any worse. Stop reading- it’s not making you feel any better, is it?! Trust the medicine to kick in and try to distract yourself meantime.

I just had hemorrhoid surgery (staple procedure) 2 days ago and just had my first bowel movement. Afterwards my hemorrhoids seem to be the same as before the surgery. Just as large and all. Someone please let me know if this is okay and normal, orif I need to go back to the hospital.

I had a radical hemorriodectomy about 15 years ago (different procedure but should have the same result).

You will have pain and swelling for weeks. It is to early to tell if the Doctor missed any. I’m sure you have a followup check-up and they will re-scope and catch anything they missed, if anything, at that time.

My cousin has been told he needs a Hemorrhoidectomy. He is only 21 yrs old. He has been suffering for about 3 yrs. Anyone know about this?

A hemorrhoidectomy is when they remove a hemorrhoid.

Incisions are made around the hemorrhoid, the vein inside the hemorrhoid is tied off, and the hemorrhoid is removed. The surgical area can either be sewn closed or left open. The person usually goes home the same day. Recovery is generally 2-3 weeks (not in the hospital), just general healing time.

Things to expect:
Pain (take pain meds), especially after bowel movements
Some bleeding is normal, especially with the first bowel movement after surgery
Minor swelling (ice packs are helpful)

I may be facing this surgery soon. I’m going to the doc today to get another opinion. I’ve heard it’s just awful. Any help would be much appreciated and any ideas about recovery as well.

Yes I have after having my daughter at 19 they became so bad it was the only option at the time, I was 22 when I had the operation. Yes its not very comfortable for 2 days the nursing staff will give you pain relief if you are in alot of pain. The worst part for about 2 days is they make you have bowel movements its like passing glass. After 2 days it gets easier. I am free of piles just now but the Dr who operated on me told me there was always a good chance they would come back, they are only varocoise viens in the back passage, and after a while the pressure just moves on to other viens and they re occur. Its always a good subject for people to joke about, not funny if you have to suffer them.Its always a good idea to walk alot after the operation has been completed and dont get consipated. I wish you well.

After a this surgery, constipation is very common as a bowel movement hurts. A lot!
So people avoid going to the toilet.

If she has not moved her bowels in quiet a while then all the faeces will still be moving down to come out, although more slowly. Because the body is not expelling it, it is squashing together causing a massive, solid block. That’s impaction.
Trying to move that is painful and difficult.
If she has got to that point she is going to need more than excercise, increased fibre and water, she will need to see her Doctor for a powerful laxative. Or better still the powder mixture that they use for a colonoscopy. This is best as it turns the faeces to liquid and makes it easier to shift.
If this fails it will be a case for ‘manual evaction’.

Because the stool is so hard and large it can press on the nerves in the anus and bowel causing numbness and/or pain along your legs and coccyx area.

If she is really suffering bad from constipation I suggest the Doctor.

has anyone out there had a hemorrhoidectomy and if so how many days off work? my job is not streneous. i have been working with very painfull thrombosed hemorrhoids i can’t imagine the recovery of the surgery being any more painfull. please help and no smart *ss answers please. thanks

The days off work depends on the type surgery the Dr. has to perform. one friend had a surgery that let him go back to work in 2 days and he had little or no discomfort. Another friend was off for a week and had to carry around the donut to sit on and he was miserable for quite a while. You can go home after the first BM. When that happens, you will leave claw marks on the bathroom wall. Anyway, talk to your Dr. about the procedure and he will tell you what to expect.

Looks to me a little bit too soon to have them back. I suggest to go back and tell them that the procedure wasn’t successful.

Someone in my family is considering this but I said I bet the surgery & healing would hurt more than the occassional flare up of the hemorrhoids. They still think they want the surgery. The gels & medicated wipes haven’t helped him. Any helpful hints/advice?
If you had the surgery, how long did it take for you to heal & were there complications?

I haven’t had the surgery, but have seen patients that have.
The healing time takes about 8 weeks.
However, that means NOTHING strenous.
If you lift too much or bed over too much you could possibly rip out your stiches, or slip your bands off.
This could cause bleeding.
However, the patients I’ve had that have had the surgery say no more hemorroidal pain…..
Just the pain from the initial surgery, then that goes away in about 2 weeks… then they just have to heal.

A friend of my dad’s had this done recently…he said only have this procedure done if it is absolutely necessary! Recovery was very painful…he said the first time he went to the bathroom it felt like he was shitting a thousand razor blades. If I were you I wouldn’t go through with it unless you are in a serious amount of pain.

I had a thrombosed external hemorroid excised/drained in Feb. 2007. I was pregnant at the time and had my baby at end of February. The hemorroid is no longer thrombosed but is still there. I was wondering if anyone out there has had the surgery to remove this? Apparently surgery is one of the few options left to remove an external hemorroid that has persisted after home treatments. Any advice and perspective on this would be appreciated. Thank you!

I had the exact same thing happen to me while carrying twins. Nothing hurt as bad as that thing did….

If the hemorrhoid isn’t causing you any problems, like swelling etc. Why worry about it? It may just be more like tag now.

I have had extensive hemorrhoidectomy. If this is the only one you have, it’s totally on the exterior and you want it removed it probably is not going to be a big production. Within two weeks you should be just fine. The pain level for just this one most likely will be minimal. The doctor would give you pain meds to handle the pain and while it is weird you can also use an ice pack to help reduce any additional pain or swelling.

Now if you have more than just the one and you have internal hemorrhoids, expect the pain level to be higher. And possible swelling can be uncomfortable as hell. And you will really want that ice!

In my case I developed a polyp during healing that later needed to be removed. It was an outpatient "repair" but the doctor doing it got a bit too much tissue (as I said my surgery was extensive and there was not a lot of tissue left) and I eventually started having a weak spot between the rectum and and vagina. This is manageable but sort of weird too.

I'm scheduled for a hemorrhoidectomy on 12/10 and was told it would be a 30 minute procedure and recovery would be a breeze – been reading HORROR stories online…wanted to talk to someone who has been through it to get the truth.

i had it done a yr ago…was in hospital 3 1/2 days…they gave me an IV with meds in it…liquid diet to start with…im not gonna lie….it was very painful…esp going to potty 1st time…felt like someone taking a firing hot rod and shoving up bottom….i was only out of work a week….slightly painful sitting and standing up…using a blowup cushion helps…sitz baths…any more info, please email
